Gov. Roy Cooper Vetoes Bill That Would Remove Foreign Citizens from Voting Rolls
November 6, 2019
Earlier this week, LWVNC sent Gov. Roy Cooper a letter urging him to veto Senate Bill 250. Today, he did just that.
“Only citizens should be allowed to vote,” Cooper said in an emailed statement. “But blocking legitimate voters from casting a ballot is a risk we cannot take when the law already prevents non-citizens from voting and has legitimate mechanisms to remove them from the rolls.”
Cooper noted that SB250 could create a high risk of voter harassment and intimidation and discourage citizens from voting.
Cooper also signed SB683 into law, which restores early voting on the last Saturday before Election Day and extends some voting hours.
