Brenda Rogers' Personal Story

I have known of the League of Women Voters, it seems, my entire life, but I didn't become a member until after I retired and felt I had time to devote to volunteer work. I attended my first meeting with a former colleague of mine and became involved through her. Before I knew it, I was stuffing envelopes inviting people to the annual Women's Equality Day reception. I volunteered to be on the Education Committee, which was quite active on lots of issues. When asked to serve out a term on the Wake Board, I agreed to co-chair the Women's Equality Day event. Through this activity I met lots of League members who were all so willing to help. I continued on the Board and later served as vice president. I attended my first LWVNC Council meeting in Asheville, where I met interesting, committed women, including Beverly Kawalec, who chaired the Nominating Committee for the State League. When she asked me to serve on the State Board, I agreed. I guess my biggest project with the State has been planning and coordinating the 2007 convention in Carthage though I also consider the development of the advocacy program and the hiring of a part-time lobbyist to be major accomplishments. Attending the national convention in Minneapolis in 2006 was probably one of the best experiences for learning about how the League adopts a program and develops its plan of action. League involvement has been very rewarding, and I have enjoyed getting to know so many League members.
